Become a Volunteer Befriender

“I just decided to do it and make myself available as much as possible. I enjoy helping others, it gets me out and about and gives me the opportunity to meet people.”
– Irma Jennis

overview

What is a Befriender?

A Befriender is a volunteer who is willing to visit an older person and provide friendly chats and companionship on a regular basis.

All our Befrienders are hand-picked and required to register with us, provide us with referees (whom we contact), and complete a Disclosing and Barring Scheme check (DBS). We try to match volunteers to older people as close as possible as the ensuing friendship is invaluable.

When do visits take place?

Any time that is mutually convenient for client and volunteer. Some people meet at the same time each week, others make arrangements on a week by week basis.

Most visits last an hour or two and we stay in contact with our volunteers and clients to understand and address any concerns.
